Love the shot! Thanks for the creative setup. I have two questions: Can you combine both lights behind her, i.e., put the gel and the Magbeam on the same flash unit. Would that work? Also is there another way to light up Kiara?

I love doing this. I have done jobs where the there is a party with dancing but the lighting is really really bad and its not very dark in there either. This set up can make a really non atmospheric party look like a great party. It can be tricky not allowing other flashlights to affect the coloured projection onto the back wall (when you have multiple moving subjects and no room for an octabox with grid!!) Thanks Pye for another great tutorial. I've learned huge amounts from you over the years.

Is it necessary for the two lights in the back or can that be done by gelling and using the mag mask on one light? Or was that just a creative choice?

using a grid, then throwing a soft modifier over it just defeats the purpose of the grid. Unless you just want to kill 2 stops of power.

Or add one more flash from behind the couple with blue gel

Another awesome video. You mentioned to set the ambient with aperture and I'd like to know if we can set it with shutter speed? Why would we want to set the ambient with aperture vs shutter speed and vs versa.

scratching my head!!!! So, why there is no highlight on the concrete railing behind her head? That part should have took a good amount of light. And why is the rest of her dress is highlighted when it should not have got much light!!!! OK OK, photoshop or lightroom with brushing was used to make adjustments. If this is true, then this is a major factor what was skipped from the video.

Another great vid from a guy who knows his business! I've always been a natural light photographer when shooting outdoors, reserving the strobes for the studio. Most of my client work outdoors has been in the style of "let's go for a walk, and we'll get shots as we go". Using flash is so much more intentional, but so powerful that I have been needing to use it more recently, so I appreciate these tutorials as they help keep my thinking pointed in the right direction once I pull that flash and modifier out of the bag.
